32nd Thursday in Ordinary Time
Wisdom 7: 22b – 8: 1; Ps 119; Luke 17: 20 – 25
It is clear that the author of the Book of Wisdom speaks from experience. In the first sentence alone there are 23 adjectives that he, writing about a hundred years before the birth of Christ, uses to describe Lady Wisdom. For the author Wisdom is a she – “…she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity…For she is the aura of the might of God…she is the refulgence of eternal light.”
Reflecting on the author’s choice of words – in his attempt to describe Wisdom – we realize that he cannot find enough to say about Wisdom that passes “into holy souls from age to age” – that has passed into him. The experience has a lasting effect.
For us, in our reception of the Holy Eucharist, this Wisdom penetrates and pervades us so that in our depths we are gifted with a sensitivity toward God, a feel for the things of God because Wisdom moves us to live for God so that we truly pray what we heard in the responsorial psalm: “Let Your face shine upon Your servant and….Let my soul live to praise You.” (Ps 119)
The author speaking from his heart shares this precious truth: “For there is naught God loves, be it one who dwells with Wisdom.” May we be that “one.”
