Summer Calm
Things are relatively quiet these warm summer days in our corner of the Genesee Valley while the brethren strive to grow in love of God and neighbor, the work of all Christians wherever we are. A bit disruptive have been the colds making the rounds of several of the brethren lately. In keeping with the spirit of St. Benedict’s common life even colds are shared! Because enough members of the community were not feeling well this past week our monthly community dialogue was cancelled. But the worse seems to be over as everyone is back up and around.
While many of us are enjoying the 80-90 degree temperatures the area is in need of rain. Already large patches of grass have turned yellow and crops here and there show signs of wilting. Area farmers are counting on the saying that ‘when it rains it pours’.

LECTIO NOTEBOOK
The mystery of the spiritual life is that Jesus desires to meet us in the seclusion of our own heart, to make his love known to us there, to free us from our fears, and to make our own deepest self known to us.
In the privacy of our heart, therefore, we can learn not only to know Jesus, but through Jesus to know ourselves as well. If you reflect on this a bit more you will see an interaction between God’s love revealing itself to you and a constant growth in self-knowledge.
Each time you let the love of God penetrate deeper into your heart, you lose a bit of your anxiety; and every time you shed a bit of your anxiety, you learn to know yourself better and long all the more to be known by your loving God.
