In the promise of the Eucharist Jesus explains why this food is necessary: I am the bread of life, he declares (John 6:48), Just as the Father who has life sent me and I have life because of the Father, so the man who feeds on me will have life because of me (John 6:57).
The Father is the first source of life: this life he has given to the Son, who in turn communicates it to mankind. He who feeds on Christ in the Eucharist does not have to wait until the hereafter to receive eternal life. He already possesses it on earth, and in it he possesses the guarantee of the resurrection of the body at the end of the world: He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up on the last day (John 6:54).
