Community Annual Retreat
Beginning Monday and continuing until Sunday the 21st we will be making our annual retreat. During that time each day will be something of a hermit day with more time for leisure, silence and solitude. There will be no assigned work except other than one bake day and what is necessary for daily life.
Our retreat director, Fr. Raymond Studzinski, OSB, monk of St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana will give us a daily conference and be available for private meetings.
Currently he is an associate professor in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC where he teaches courses on religious development and spirituality. Say a few prayers that we will be open and responsive to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit during this time of special grace.
Solemnity of St. Benedict
This past Thursday, the 11th, we celebrated the solemnity of our father, St. Benedict. In his homily for the Mass of the day Fr. Justin provided us with a fine summary of Benedictine spirituality. It will be of special interest to those contemplating monastic life according to the Rule of St. Benedict. And a fine refresher for those who have been striving to live for several years. The homily can be found at homily for St. Benedict’s feast.

Simon Peter’s attitude at the time of the washing of feet clearly indicates the temptation which can assail a sincere disciple. The impulsive Peter exaggerates in two opposite senses.
First of all he does not want Jesus to wash him, then he wants Jesus to wash not only his feet, but his head. We would often like to decide what the Master should do and how He should do it.
What Jesus desires is that we let ourselves be directed. This is loving submission to His initiatives even though we do not understand them.
