15th Thursday in Ordinary Time
Ex 3: 11 – 20; Ps: 105; Matthew 11: 28 – 30
Being given a very important and sacred mission, Moses needs some information: “What is Your Name?” The response: “I AM WHO AM!” The response is beyond both Moses’ and our comprehension. We, who move from future to present to past at every moment, cannot comprehend anyone who whose life, whose total being is always NOW – for whom there is no past nor future, the One Who is the I AM.
Then, in His response, God adds something – He could have said, “I am the Almighty, the Creator, the Sustainer of heaven and earth” but in His mercy and wisdom, the “I AM WHO AM” presents Himself to Moses as “the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and Jacob, this is My name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.” By this God assures Moses that all is right and good, that the “I AM WHO AM” can be trusted.
In addition, it appears that God desires to be known as the One who relates with His creatures, with all, with us. God, who is totally complete in Himself, who needs no one for His existence, was in communion with Moses’ forebears and desires to be in communion with all people with a love beyond all telling, with mercy beyond all understanding. It is all summed up in God’s message to Moses: “Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.”
With this same merciful love, Jesus speaks to us and all people” “Come to Me…take My yoke upon you…learn from Me” – there is no condition – there is only total welcoming – there is ardent desire for us to be in communion with Him and through Him with the Father and the Spirit.
On this Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, our God might and could say, “I AM the God of Mary, your Mother in Christ. With Jesus, her Divine Son, she desires with passion that we come to her Son to the Father in the Spirit. For no other reason than our God desires us to know Him.
Her words at Cana speak of her love for us, “Do whatever He tells you.”
