Saturday the 25th Week in Ordinary Time
“For all these things”, says the book of Ecclesiastes, “God will bring you to judgment”. In other words, if something looks good to you, go for it. But know also that not just anything goes; you have to answer to God for every last bit of it.
The Sages of the Talmud drew a conclusion from this, and they worded it like this: “Repent one day before your death”. They meant that you can’t be sure of the day of your death, so repent today, because you may die tomorrow. And you better repent tomorrow, too, because you may die the day after.
That way, if you repent every day, then you will live the way you should be living. And when God finally brings you to judgment on the day of your death, then you will be at peace, and your last holy communion will become your viaticum.
