4th Saturday After Easter
Acts 13: 44 -52; Ps 98; John 14: 7 – 14
Jesus’ word: “If you know Me, then you will know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him” – elicits an immediate request from Philip, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” And it is apparent that Philip’s request touches a deep chord in Jesus, a special, personal, sacred chord – His own unique relationship with His Father.
In His response, I believe Jesus’ words about the Father flow out in quick succession – He did not have to think about it, pause to reflect on how to answer. Nine times He speaks of the Father and all the while in and through His very person is revealing the Father to Philip, to the others.
Surely, it is Jesus’ passionate desire that these men, His chosen ones, come to know the Father with delight and that they know with absolute certainty that the Father delights in them, that He finds favor in them.
Each day at the conclusion of Vespers the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the monstrance for our adoration and our petitions, especially for vocations. We look upon the Consecrated Host with the eyes of our bodies but with the eyes of our hearts, the gift of faith, we believe in and look upon the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the One who reveals the Father.
When Jesus stood before Philip and the others, could it not be said that in His sacred Humanity He was the living monstrance of the Father – Jesus did say, “If you know Me, then you will know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
In our presence to the exposed Blessed Sacrament the Lord Jesus does reveal the Father to us – as He did to the disciples and may we, too, be filled with an ever deepening delight for our Father and with profound gratitude know that we are held in delight by Him.
