60th ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDATION
ABBEY OF OUR LADY OF THE GENESEE
1951 - 2011
DECEASED MONKS OF GENESEE
Br. Patrick Ryan, OCSO, Infirmarian
July, 2011
The members of the Genesee community who have died remain very
much a part of the life of our community, we pray for them daily, and are inspired by the memory of the example they gave, each in his own way, of seeking: God in Christ Jesus in the Cistercian way of life.
There are now twenty-eight deceased monks of Genesee buried in our cemetery to the southeast of the Abbey Church. Brother Dennis Mayer was the first to die, on September 25, 1951, a few months after the community had been founded; the most recent was Father Raymond Fournier, September 21, 2010.
In 2002 Dom John Denburger, fifth abbot of Genesee, asked me to prepare a Genesee Necrology containing brief descriptions of the deceased members of our community. His intention was to help the younger members of the community imbibe its spirit, and to help all in the community keep in touch with our tradition. As the project unfolded, it was decided to include entries on all deceased monks of Genesee; all deceased Genesee founders of our daughterhouse of Novo Mundo, Parana, Brazil; and a few particularly significant benefactors of the community.
This Necrology is read at dinner in the refectory here at Genesee on the anniversary of each one's death, proceeding from January through December, but only every other year, lest being repeated too frequently the entries become overly familiar and tedious to the community. If any reader of this Abbey webpage would like to read the individual entries for the deceased of Genesee, please see our Deceased of Genesee Page.
