PENTECOST SUNDAY

On this day
the days of Pentecost
were accomplished, alleluia.

On this day
the Holy Spirit appeared
in the form of fire to the disciples,
and gave them the gift of his graces;

he sent them throughout the whole world
to preach and bear witness:
"He who believes and is baptized
shall be saved, " alleluia!

And so, with this celebration of the birthday of the Church we bring the Easter Season to an end and begin the season of Ordinary Time. May the graces of this Easter Season remain with us all throughout the year!

At Long Last
For several weeks now our bakery crew has been working diligently at developing a new variety to our bread line: Raisin Bread Lite. Finally, after much trial and error the loaf is near perfect (we always leave a little room for improvement!) and ready to be marketed.

Pictured here part of our bakery crew anxiously awaiting the results of the day's mix: Randy, maintenance, Fr. Jerome, manager, Mike Scollon, supervisor, Mike Raffard, mixer.

What makes this new loaf "lite" is the calorie count of 50 compared to regular raisin bread at 90 calories. At the moment it is available only at our Abbey bread store but we hope it will be carried by our distributors before long.

Success! Mike Raffard unloading a good-to-go batch of Raisin Bread Lite from the mixer.

Monastic Varia
Fr. Gerard returned home from the Novice Directors meeting at Berryville on Thursday and gave us an interesting report on the meeting in chapter this morning including a rundown of vocations in other communities some of which are doing quite well.

Speaking of vocations we held our first Vocation Discernment Retreat this weekend with two discerning retreatants. The retreat included a special program including talks from a few of the brothers, tours of bakery and monastery and joining the community for Mass and dinner today. All accounts point to a successful retreat. The idea for these retreats is to help men with general vocational discernment who have an interest in monastic life. Our next retreat will be the weekend of October 15th.

Have you ever wondered who is the founder of cenobitic monasticism and what is the meaning of cenobitic? In his homily for the 6th Saturday of Easter Fr. Marcellus gives us the answers. See homily for May 15.

Schedule Changes
Because of Memorial Day our distributors have asked us to change our baking schedule for the week of May 31st. You'll find the changes for Mass times at Memorial Day Week.

Lectio Notebook

Pentecost isn't just the celebration of a past event. It is important for us today,, because the Holy Spirit is important for us today. The Spirit is hard to picture because the Spirit is within us when we are in God's grace.

The Spirit is like the air we breathe, the light that goes on when we have an idea, the fire that burns in our heart. And so the Scriptures use these symbols to help us know the Spirit; in the first reading (for today's Mass) the Spirit is a strong driving wind whereas in John's gospel the Spirit is the gentle breath of Jesus who breathes on his apostles and says receive the Holy Spirit.

In either case, whether as a powerful wind or a gentle breath, the Spirit is like the invisible air we cannot live without. The Spirit is like the light that goes on in our mind when we have an idea: Jesus tells us in the gospel he will guide you to all truth.

Jesus couldn't explain everything to the apostles that he wanted them to know, but the Spirit turned on the light in their minds to be able to understand all that he had been teaching them. The Spirit also appeared to the apostles as tongues of fire, a fire that started burning in them to proclaim Christ with courage and conviction.
